Alle hier ge\u00e4u\u00dferten Meinungen sind aber vollst\u00e4ndig und unbeeinflusst die meinen, alles andere w\u00e4re mir auch zu doof.<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ich habe in meiner wissenschaftlichen, freiberuflichen und freizeitlichen Laufbahn bisher erst einmal in einem Projekt gearbeitet, das ein Bildbudget hatte. Und auch in diesem einen Projekt war es nicht so, dass wir verwenden konnten, was wir wollten. Bilder sind, wenn sie den \u00fcblichen Lizenzbedingungen unterliegen, ziemlich teuer &#8211; was oft gut so ist, schlie\u00dflich m\u00fcssen auch FotografInnen von etwas leben, in einigen F\u00e4llen aber auch vollkommen absurd ist wie bei Bildagenturen, die f\u00fcr die Verwendung eines Bildes dreistellige Summen wollen, von denen nichts beim Urheber ankommt.<\/p>\n<p>Umso wichtiger ist es, Zugriff auf solche Medien zu haben, die unter freien (z.B. Creative Commons) oder gar keinen (Gemeinfreiheit) Lizenzbedingungen stehen. Google hat in den letzten Jahren enorme Fortschritte in der Bildersuche gemacht, die man mittlerweile nach verschiedenen Lizenzmodellen filtern lassen kann. Besonders pr\u00e4zise ist das allerdings nicht (es erm\u00f6glicht z.B. keine Filterung von Creative-Commons-Bildern, die nur in nonkommerziellen Zusammenh\u00e4ngen verwendet werden d\u00fcrfen, was schon f\u00fcr mein Blog nicht zutrifft) und es findet auch nur einen Bruchteil der m\u00f6glichen Medien, haupts\u00e4chlich von Flickr und Wikimedia Commons.<\/p>\n<p>An dieser Stelle kommt Europeana ins Spiel &#8211; eine auch unter meinen Historiker-KollegInnen noch r\u00e4tselhaft unbekanntes Angebot. Die offizielle Gr\u00fcndungslegende besagt sinngem\u00e4\u00df, dass die Europ\u00e4ische Union einen digitalen Wissenspeicher der kulturellen \u00dcberlieferung f\u00fcr Europa schaffen wollte, tats\u00e4chlich ging es wohl 2005 eher darum, dem soeben gestarteten Google Books etwas halbwegs Ebenb\u00fcrtiges entgegenzusetzen. Und wie das bei gro\u00dfen Projekten so ist sind beide Konkurrenten in den vergangenen zw\u00f6lf Jahren in ihren Feldern so gewachsen, dass sie kaum noch etwas miteinander gemein haben.<\/p>\n<p>Europeana jedenfalls bietet als zentraler Sammelort zahlreicher europ\u00e4ischer Nationalbibliotheken, Museen und Archive einen gigantischen Fundus von digitalisierten kulturellen Hinterlassenschaften, krankt jedoch, so zumindest mein Eindruck, etwas am Mangel an Aufmerksamkeit. Aus diesem Grund wurden im vergangenen Juni Anke, Anne und ich von der Stichting Europeana zu einem unverbindlichen Treffen nach Den Haag eingeladen, um aus Bloggerperspektive zu berichten, wie man dies \u00e4ndern k\u00f6nnte.<\/p>\n<p>Ein Teil der dort entwickelten Idee besteht aus diesem Blogpost (und dem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kulturtussi.de\/europeana\/\">von Anke in der vergangenen Woche<\/a> sowie dem von Anne in der kommenden): Wir erz\u00e4hlen, wof\u00fcr Europeana gut ist, und legen es unseren LeserInnen ans Herz. Das habe ich auch schon getan bevor ich nach Den Haag eingeladen wurde, denn bei Europeana findet man teils sehr hochaufl\u00f6sende Medien, die ihren Weg eben noch nicht in die Wikipedia gefunden haben. Es ist wichtig, f\u00fcr solche \u00dcberlieferungen (haupts\u00e4chlich Abbildungen) nicht nur eine Quelle zu haben, da sich sonst die Perspektive einengt. Wir kennen das von historisch bedeutsamen Ereignissen: Ein Bild, ein Filmausschnitt setzt sich durch und wird als feststehender Code immer wieder verwendet &#8211; und zu runden Jubil\u00e4en guckt dann doch mal wieder jemand ins Archiv und stellt fest dass da noch ganz andere Aufnahmen liegen, die dann als &#8222;Bislang unver\u00f6ffentlicht&#8220; zur Schau gestellt werden.<\/p>\n<p>Teil 2 ist die Idee der &#8222;Europeana Trusted Blogger&#8220;, \u00fcber das Camille Tenneson, mit der wir in den letzten Monaten zusammengearbeitet haben, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.europeana.eu\/resources\/europeana-brand\/writing-guidelines\">hier gebloggt hat<\/a>. Kurz zusammenfasst tauschen wir Medien gegen Aufmerksamkeit: Wir als BloggerInnen verwenden Medien von Europeana (und ich k\u00f6nnte fast jeden meiner bisherigen Posts mit Europeana-Medien bereichern) und machen damit auf dieses Angebot aufmerksam, im Gegenzug werden diese Posts automatisch auch bei Europeana online verlinkt &#8211; wo genau und in welcher Form, dar\u00fcber verhandeln wir noch.<\/p>\n<p>Im Zuge der Arbeiten an diesem Projekt haben wir gemerkt, wie wichtig der gegenseitige Austausch ist &#8211; alle Kontaktpersonen bei Europeana arbeiten sp\u00fcrbar mit Begeisterung an der freien Zug\u00e4nglichkeit von Kultur und Medien, an Open Access und Creative Commons, gleichzeitig mussten wir als BloggerInnen auch zwischendurch immer wieder einwerfen, dass das Gleichgewicht der Vorteile gewahrt bleiben m\u00fcsse &#8211; das letzte das ich wollte war, dass Menschen die gerne bloggen mit diesem Programm in irgendeiner Form zur unentgeltlichen Arbeit gezwungen werden. Das ist nicht der Fall: Alle die mitmachen behalten vollkommene Kontrolle \u00fcber ihre Texte. Wie immer, wenn die Auswahl riesig ist, brauchte ich einen Ankn\u00fcpfungspunkt, um mich zurechtzufinden. Und weil ich mir gerade erst alte Satellitenaufnahmen bei Google Earth angesehen hatte, suchte ich nach Karten &#8211; und siehe da: bei Europeana gibt es eine Unmenge davon, auch von der Stadt, in der ich aufgewachsen bin, dem kleinen, provinziellen Wesel am Niederrhein, das einmal eine wichtige Hanse- und Festungsstadt war. Sehr beeindruckend sehen die Maueranlagen der Stadt im oben gezeichneten Jahr 1760 aus, kaum vorstellbar in der heutigen Zeit, das solch riesige Schutzw\u00e4lle in so ausgekl\u00fcgelten Mustern einmal bestanden. Denn Wesel ist nicht auf so sicheren Bahnen wie St\u00e4dtchen wie Heidelberg durch die Geschichte gefahren, Wesel wurde im Zweiten Weltkrieg zu 97 Prozent zerst\u00f6rt, wie hier unschwer erkennbar:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1673\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1673\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1280px-Wesel_1945.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1280px-Wesel_1945.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"987\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wesel 1945, aufgenommen von der U.S. Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Und doch haben sich einige Dinge nicht ge\u00e4ndert. Eine Landmarke ist auf drei der vier Abbildungen erkennbar: Der <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willibrordi-Dom\">Willibrordi-Dom,<\/a> die gr\u00f6\u00dfte Kirche der Stadt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibrordi.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibrordi.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Um den Dom herum sind Stra\u00dfen erkennbar die, soweit ich das sehen kann, bis heute exakt so weiterbestehen &#8211; was eigentlich nicht verwunderlich ist, weil Stra\u00dfen ja nur verlegt werden k\u00f6nnen, wenn dort alle H\u00e4user abgerissen werden. Dass dies nach 1945 trotz der Zerst\u00f6rungen nicht passierte (und Altstadtgrundrisse sind nur selten verkehrsplanerisch vorteilhaft), lag vor allem an der bestehenden Kanalisation, die meist unbesch\u00e4digt war. Auf dieser Gegen\u00fcberstellung kann man das gut erkennen &#8211; vor allem an der sich aufgabelnden, auf den Dom zulaufenden heutigen Fu\u00dfg\u00e4ngerzone, dem bis heute (als Biergarten) existierenden Kornmarkt links sowie der Stadtmauer, die heute als Umgehungsstra\u00dfe um den Stadtkern herum fungiert:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1677\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibord2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibord2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kartenmaterial von <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oomap.co.uk\/oom\/\">OpenOrienteeringMap<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Und zuletzt, sehr versteckt, vom Boden aus nicht zu erkennen ein letzter Rest der oben so absurd scheinenden Befestigungsanlagen. Ganz im S\u00fcden der Stadt Wesel, direkt zwischen den Fl\u00fcssen Rhein und Lippe gelegen, befindet sich zwischen Angel- und Hundesportverein sowie dem Lippe-Stadion eine kleine Einfamilienhaussiedlung, wie sie vollkommen typisch ist f\u00fcr den Niederrhein als wohnungspolitischem Speckg\u00fcrtel des Ruhrgebiets. So weit so normal, allerdings folgen die zwei parallel laufenden Stra\u00dfen des Wohngebietes einem nun bekannten Muster:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1678\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wesel2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wesel2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kartenmaterial von <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oomap.co.uk\/oom\/\">OpenOrienteeringMap<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Solche Spielereien kann man mit fast jeder Stadt, fast jedem Dorf in Deutschland betreiben, man braucht nur Interesse, ein Auge f\u00fcr die Grundrisse der Stadt und eben ein paar alte Karten, die hochaufl\u00f6send genug sind. All the opinions expressed here are completely and uninfluenced mine. <\/em><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Only once have I, in my scientific, freelance and leisure time career, worked on a project that had a picture budget. And even in this one project we could not just use what we wanted. Images are quite expensive if they are subject to the usual licensing conditions &#8211; which is often a good thing, since photographers also have to live on something, but in some cases it is also completely absurd, as in the case of picture agencies who want three-digit sums for the use of a picture, of which nothing is received by the author.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore all the more important to have access to media that are under free (e. g. Creative Commons) or no (freedom of association) licence conditions. In recent years, Google has made enormous progress in image search, which can now be filtered according to different license models. However, this is not particularly precise (e. g. it doesn&#8217;t allow filtering of Creative Commons images that can only be used in non-commercial contexts, which doesn&#8217;t apply to my blog) and it finds only a fraction of the possible media, mainly from Flickr and Wikimedia Commons.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Europeana comes into play &#8211; a mysteriously unknown offer among my fellow historians. According to the official founding legend, the European Union wanted to create a digital repository of cultural tradition for Europe, but in 2005 it was probably more a matter of countering the Google Books project. And as is the case with large projects, both competitors have grown so much in their fields over the past twelve years that they have hardly anything in common with each other.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, Europeana, as the central collection centre of numerous European national libraries, museums and archives, offers a gigantic pool of digitised cultural legacies, but, at least as far as I am concerned, it is suffering from a lack of attention. For this reason, Anke, Anne and I were invited by the Europeana Foundation to a non-binding meeting in The Hague last June to report from a blogging perspective on how this could be changed.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the idea developed there consists of this blog post (and that of <a href=\"https:\/\/kulturtussi.de\/europeana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Anke last week <\/a>and that of Anne in the coming week): we talk about what Europeana is good for and recommend it to our readers. I did that before I was invited to The Hague, because at Europeana you can find some very high-resolution media, which haven&#8217;t found their way into the Wikipedia yet. It is important not to have only one source for such narratives (mainly illustrations) as otherwise the perspective will be limited. We know this from historically significant events: A picture, a film excerpt asserts itself and is used again and again as a fixed code &#8211; and to round anniversaries someone looks then nevertheless once again into the archives and realizes that there are still completely different photographs, which are put then as &#8222;hitherto unpublished&#8220; to the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Part 2 is the idea of the &#8222;Europeana Trusted Blogger&#8220;, about which Camille Tenneson, with whom we have worked in the last few months, <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.europeana.eu\/resources\/europeana-brand\/writing-guidelines\">blogged here<\/a>. In short, we exchange media for attention: We as bloggers use media from Europeana (and I could enrich almost every one of my previous posts with Europeana media) and draw attention to this offer, in return these posts are automatically linked online at Europeana &#8211; where exactly and in which form is still being negotiated.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of the work on this project, we realised how important the mutual exchange is &#8211; all contact persons at Europeana are working with enthusiasm on the free accessibility of culture and media, on Open Access and Creative Commons, at the same time we as bloggers had to put in at the same time that the balance of advantages had to be maintained &#8211; the last thing I wanted was for people who like to blog with this program in some way to be able to get to know each other. This is not the case: all those who take part in the contest retain complete control over their texts. As always, when the selection is huge, I needed a starting point to find my way around. And because I had only just looked at old satellite images at Google Earth, I was looking for maps &#8211; and lo and behold: at Europeana there are a lot of them, also from the city in which I grew up, the small, provincial Wesel on the Lower Rhine, which was once an important Hanseatic and fortress city. The walls of the city look very impressive in the year 1760, drawn above, hardly imaginable today, which once consisted of such huge defensive walls in such ingenious patterns. Because Wesel did not travel through history on such safe tracks as Heidelberg&#8217;s small town, and 97 percent of Wesel was destroyed during the Second World War, as can be seen here:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1673\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1673\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1280px-Wesel_1945.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/1280px-Wesel_1945.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"987\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wesel 1945, aufgenommen von der U.S. Air Force<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And yet some things have not changed. A landmark can be seen on three of the four images: The <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willibrordi-Dom\">Willibrordi Cathedral, <\/a> the largest church in the city.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibrordi.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibrordi.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around the cathedral there are roads that, as far as I can see, still exist today &#8211; which is not really surprising, because roads can only be laid if all the houses are demolished there. The fact that this did not happen after 1945 in spite of the destruction (and Old Town layouts are only rarely advantageous in terms of traffic planning) was mainly due to the existing sewerage system, which was mostly undamaged. This can be seen on this juxtaposition &#8211; above all in the pedestrian precinct that leads to the cathedral, which is now a pedestrian zone, the Kornmarkt on the left, which still exists today (as a beer garden) and the city wall, which today functions as a bypass around the city centre:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1677\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1677\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibord2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/willibord2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kartenmaterial von <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oomap.co.uk\/oom\/\">OpenOrienteeringMap<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And lastly, very hidden, from the ground not to recognize a last remnant of the seemingly absurd fortifications above. Located in the south of the city of Wesel, directly between the rivers Rhine and Lippe, a small housing estate is located between the Fishing and Dog Sports Club and the Lippe Stadium, which is a typical example of the Lower Rhine as a housing policy backbone of the Ruhr area. So far so normal, but the two parallel streets of the residential area follow a familiar pattern:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1678\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wesel2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moritz-hoffmann.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/wesel2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kartenmaterial von <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.oomap.co.uk\/oom\/\">OpenOrienteeringMap<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Such gimmicks can be played with almost every town, almost every village in Germany, you only need interest, an eye for the ground plans of the town and just a few old maps, which are high resolution enough.
